Clicker training

At Wigtoft Dog Training Club we promote clicker training. This is a training method where we mark the desired behaviour with a "click" sound. This sound is produced by a mechanical device, called a clicker. The animal will learn that a click means that the behaviour or action shown at the time of the click was correct and a nice treat is now available. This means that clicks will be followed by a treat all the time.  By marking the right behaviour and then reinforcing it with food, the animal will get motivated to try to repeat the same movement or behaviour.

No matter what age/size or type of animal, they can all be trained with this method. They learn by doing and by trial and error they will soon find out what is the quickest way to the reward. A click is more powerful for training than a spoken word because it is not a sound heard by the animal in other circumstances, and it always sounds the same.

More about clicker training on our training DVD: “Barking Mad about Clicker Training”, where clicker training is explained in great detail with some practical examples.
